MANILA, Philippines - University of the Philippines edged Letran, 67-66, in overtime in senior play while San Beda likewise snatched a 70-69 victory over UST in the juniors side in the Fr. Martin Cup Division 2 basketball tournament at San Beda gym recently.
Mark Juruena barreled his way through a crowded shaded lane and scored a buzzer-beating layup, lifting the Maroons past a stunned Letran side for a 1-2 card in Group A.
UP’s Kim Cinco scored on a tie in the last 53 seconds to force overtime at 58 as both teams missed on their next offensive thrusts.
Paulo Cereno, meanwhile, hit a split in the last 5.5 seconds to carry the Cubs past the Tiger Cubs.
The Red Cubs, who drew a game-high 14 points with Miguel Salcedo, thus annexed their third consecutive victory in Group B.
University of Perpetual Help, with Nigerian Akhuetie Bright firing 15 points, demolished Angeles University, 81-54, in the other seniors match in Group B.
In other juniors games, the National University Bullpups blasted the La Salle Zobel Junior Archers, 88-57, to improve at 2-1, while the Letran Squires (1-2) got 33 points from Clyve Dungan to beat the Trinity Junior Stallions, 80-70.
