MANILA, Philippines - FEU’s Samantha Dawson and Bernadette Pons repulsed La Salle-Dasmariñas’ Iari Yongco and Mariel Desengano, 21-17, 21-16, to rule the third leg of the Petron Ladies’ Beach Volleyball tournament at the sand-courts of the UE-Caloocan campus recently.
Dawson and Pons scored big on their drop shots and went on to sweep their best-of-three series.
Pons, a rookie recruit from Talisay City in Negros Occidental, took charge in the second set as FEU surged to a 14-10 lead. Pons tallied four points on drop shots and an ace to put the Lady Tamaraws within match point, 20-16.
“This is the first time that I used my drop shots and it was a good experience for us,†said the 17-year-old Pons in Filipino.
FEU earlier held off UE, 21-17, 21-18, to advance to the finals.
Yongco and Desengano, on the other hand, turned back San Beda’s Janine Marciano and Frances Molina, 24-26, 21-16, 15-13, to clinch the other finals berth.
FEU started its campaign with a 21-16 win over Trinity’s Carissa Martinez and Mary Paz Soteco before thumping UE’s Leuseth Dawis and Chelo Ramos, 21-14, and Iumi Yongco and Marra Galicia, 21-16.
Winners and runners-up of the Petron volley circuit’s three legs will clash in the Battle of the Champions in Boracay later this year.
