Loyzaga warns NU’s Javillonar, sacks Mammie

Jeric Teng

MANILA, Philippines - UAAP commissioner Chito Loyzaga slapped an unsportsmanlike foul on National U’s Joeff Javillonar for his hard push that led to a shoulder injury to Santo Tomas’ Jeric Teng during the Bulldogs’ 71-67 win last Wednesday and warned the NU veteran of suspension for future offense. Not as lucky in dodging the commissioner’s axe was University of the East’s Charles Mammie, who was suspended for one game for his action during UE’s losing 71-78 game to Adamson also last Wednesday.

Javillonar blindsided an unsuspecting Teng at the 1:20 mark of the second period, causing the UST captain to fall and grimace in pain holding his right shoulder. Teng, who averaged 19 points and six rebounds in 38 minutes prior to that game, was sidelined the rest of the match and was to undergo tests to determine the extent of the injury.

Aside from Javillonar, two other players received a memo from Loyzaga after a review of Wednesday’s games, namely, Mammie and Adamson’s Roider Cabrera.

Loyzaga found merit to suspend University of the East’s Charles Mammie for “confronting, pushing and kicking Cabrera from behind with the intention to hurt” in the endgame of AdU’s 78-71 win over UE.  The Commissioner explained it was the second such infraction for Mammie, who was earlier issued a warning for “kicking and elbowing” NU’s Emmanuel Mbe during their July 7 faceoff. Mammie will thus sit out UE’s next game, against UST on Saturday.

Cabrera, meanwhile, got a warning for hitting UE’s Lord Casajeros.

â€œPlease be assured that all game tapes shall be carefully reviewed in order to assure the conduct of fairplay and sportsmanship is observed at all times,” Loyzaga warned.

Javillonar is under heavy fire for his push on Teng during one NU offensive.

“The court is big. I was near the 3pt line and nowhere near the play. What happened didn’t come from screen, rebound or seal. Can’t believe it,” Teng said on his Twitter account. “And to clarify, I was hurt with the push. Not with the fall. I was pushed from behind that hit the back of my right shoulder.”

UST team physician Raul Palma said after the game that Teng “did not dislocate his right shoulder.” According to Teng, result of X-ray on his shoulder was “okay” but they would need further confirmation after last night’s MRI rest.

“I was just advised to put ice on it and rest. I’m doubtful for Saturday,” he said.

Javillonar insisted it was not his intention to hurt Teng.

“Going for an offensive rebound lang talaga ako. Hindi ko sadya ‘yun (I had no intention to hurt him; I was just going to the offensive rebound at that time,” Javillonar stressed.

Teng’s younger brother, La Salle ace Jeron Teng, joined in the Javillonar bashing and maintained there was deliberate intention to hurt on the part of the Bulldog, a former teammate with the national youth team.

“I know it’s no accident. I’ve known him since Phl youth days,” Jeron posted on Twitter.
