Huey, pal triumph in Wimbledon

Joey Villar - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Fil-Am doubles specialist Treat Huey and Briton partner Dominic Inglot got back at former conquerors Andre Begemann and Martin Emmrich of Germany, 6-3, 6-7 (2), 7-5, 7-6 (3), to crash into the third round in the men’s doubles of Wimbledon in London Saturday night.

Huey, spearhead of the Philippines Davis Cup team, has never gotten past the third round of any Grand Slam tournament, putting him one win away from achieving a personal record.

Leaning on their strong service game, Huey and Inglot bucked a second set setback with two tough victories, including a tiebreaker in the fourth that clinched them a spot in the third round.

Huey and Inglot blasted away 18 aces while committing only four double faults en route to victory.

The win also avenged the tandem’s past defeat at the hands of the Germans.

“Because we lost to the German pair last week, Dom (Inglot) and I knew we have to step up our game and play well for us to win,” said Huey, ranked 28th in the world in doubles. “We played solid especially at the end of the sets and in the fourth set tiebreaker.”

The Huey-Inglot pair thus matched their best effort in a Grand Slam event after a third round finish in both the US Open two years ago and the French Open the last two years.

But Huey and Inglot will have their hands full in their bid to make it to the next round with no less than the top-seeded American brothers pair Bob and Mike Bryan as their next rivals.
