MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Volleyball Federation will soon hold a by-invitation only tryouts to form the national team set to compete in the Asian Senior Women’s Volleyball Championships slated Sept. 13-19 in Thailand.
Karl Geoffrey Lee Chan, acting president of the PVF, said they are expecting to complete the roster, including the coaching staff, by next week to prepare early for the Thailand meet during yesterday’s PSA Forum at Shakey’s Malate.
“We are hoping the team will come out good,†said Chan, who took over the PVF leadership after president Gener Dungo took a leave last May 31.
PVF secretary-general Otie Camangian, who also appeared in the same session presented by Shakey’s and Pagcor, said the federation will be supervising the tryouts to be extended on players of Shakey’s V-League, UAAP, NCAA and the Bomberinas.
“I believe we still have the capability to become the No. 2 (next to Thailand) at least in the Southeast Asian region,†added Chan based on the modest showing turned in by a hastily-formed selection of Shakey’s V-League players that saw action in the 2014 FIVB Women’s World Championship qualifier in Vietnam recently.
A total of 16 teams will be seeing action in the week-long Asian Senior tournament that features 12-time champion China, Iran, Vietnam, Japan, Chinese-Taipei and Korea, among others.
Meanwhile, Chan said a new set of interim board members composed of current active PVF board members, secretary-general, and other selected individuals active in the promotion and development of volleyball in the country will be named within the next two weeks.
Camangian said he already informed the entire volleyball community and both the Philippine Sports Commission and Philippine Olympic Committee about the recent changes in the PVF leadership.
“We are hoping the POC and PSC will continue supporting the PVF,†said Camangian.
Dungo filed an indefinite leave to focus on his job and other interests.
As vice president, Chan automatically took over as interim president based on PVF’s constitution and-by-laws.
