Mayweather, Alvarez start 11-city tour in NYC
NEW YORK — Floyd Mayweather and Saul "Canelo" Alvarez have started an 11-city promotional tour in Times Square, making their fight in Las Vegas in September official.
Mayweather and Alvarez both announced on Twitter last month that the undefeated fighters would face each other on Sept. 14. Their lavish news conference Monday, the first on a tour that includes stops in cities such as Washington D.C., Chicago, Miami and Mexico City, promotes one of boxing's most anticipated bouts in recent memory.
The 36-year-old Mayweather is unbeaten in 44 fights with the last a unanimous 12-round decision over Robert Guerrero on May 4 in defense of his 147-pound title.
Alvarez, a 22-year-old star from Mexico, is 42-0-1 and holds the unified 154-pound titles. The fight will be contested at 152 pounds.
