Marbury to reconnect with Pinoy fans
MANILA, Philippines - Former NBA All-Star guard Stephon Marbury arrived yesterday to touch base with his Filipino fans and at the same time discuss business opportunities involving his low-cost “Starbury†basketball shoe with possible distributors in the country.
The 13-year NBA veteran, who plays for the Beijing Ducks in the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA), expressed excitement when he told how crazy Filipinos are about basketball.
“I want to say hello to everyone,†said Marbury, adding that he hopes to create an impact on Philippine soil similar to what he did in China where he spearheaded the Ducks’ championship run last season and made it to the CBA All-Star Game four times.
Marbury was also named CBA All-Star MVP in 2010.
The legendary New York streetballer’s visit here is to finalize details of the launching of his product line hopefully by December. He is also holding talks with a private organization regarding a donation.
Marbury currently helps six charitable organizations in China, including those dealing with cancer-stricken children.
“I hope to impart not just my knowledge in basketball, but also reach out to the community and help out in any way I can,†he told reporters.
He said he’s impressed with Asians’ brand of play, adding he wouldn’t be surprised if he sees a Filipino player making it all the way to the NBA.
