MANILA, Philippines –Global FC ousted defending Singapore Cup champion Warriors FC to advance to the quarterfinals with a methodical 2-0 victory Saturday night at the Choa Chu Kang Stadium in the Lion City.
Global thus became the second Philippine team after the Loyola Meralco Sparks to enter the final eight of the prestigious club invitational in Singapore.
The United Football League reigning champions banked on Misagh Bahadoran and new recruit Jordan Robertson to topple the S.League side formerly called the Singapore Armed Forces FC in a smashing debut in the tournament.
The Warriors, who are also struggling at 10th spot in Singapore’s domestic league, could not get their acts together against Global, which on the other hand is coming off a rousing win in the United Football League.
Bahadoran fired the first goal in the 33rd minute while Robertson doubled Global’s lead five minutes later.
The victory came on the heels of Global’s rousing come-from-behind 2-1 stunner of UFL leader Stallion last Tuesday.
Global, owned by Azkals team manager Dan Palami, might face the Sparks, a 3-0 winner over Malaysia’s Harimau Muda B last weekend, DPMM Brunei or Tanjong Pagar in the two-leg quarterfinals.
