Pirates trip Nat’ls; Red Cubs in semis
MANILA, Philippines - Lyceum proved too much for the Philippine Youth team as it rolled to a 92-69 romp to stay in the hunt for a semifinal berth in the 19th Fr. Martin Cup summer basketball tournament at San Beda gym in Mendiola last Sunday.
Jesper Cayahay fired 23 points while Kinsman Frando and Cameroonian Guy Essono shot 21 points apiece as the Pirates dominated the Nationals to post their third win in five games.
The San Beda Red Cubs, meanwhile, demolished the Adamson Baby Falcons, 103-51, to complete a seven-game sweep of Group B for a spot in the semis in junior play.
Franz Abude strung up 16 points while Evan Furaque unloaded 12 markers for the Red Cubs, who quickly took charge with a 32-8 first quarter lead and never looked back.
The Pirates bucked the presence of 6-4 slotman Kobe Paras as they broke from a 48-all count in the last six minutes of the third period to pull away.
In the other game, Jarell Lim scored 17 points, while Isaac Go and Tyler Tio tallied 16 points each for the Stallions, who stopped the Far Eastern University Junior Tamaraws, 65-55.
The Stallions improved to 4-2 in Group A of the junior division while the Junior Tams, who won over the Perpetual Help Altalettes, 83-47, last Thursday, dropped to 3-3.
