Ateneo rules FCBL-Freego Cup

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Jime Escaler hit two clutch triples as Ateneo came from behind to edge National U, 79-75, and capture the sixth FCBL-Freego Cup crown at the Philippine Buddhacare gym in QC over the weekend.

Escaler took charge in the last three minutes and keyed a decisive 13-0 run, rallying the Eaglets from a 66-75 deficit and to the victory in the annual pre-season tournament for high school presented by Freego.

After a basket by Mike Nieto and four consecutive free throws by Thirdy Ravena, Escaler knocked in his second triple to shove the Eagles to a 77-75 lead.

He then capped his fourth quarter explosion with two free throws to finally seal Ateneo’s victory in the tournament sponsored by Smart Sports, Fresh Gear, Colt Commercial, Powerbest Marketing, Inc., Jumbo Plastic Linoleum, Hapee Toothpaste and Insular Square of Cebu.

On its way to the finals, Ateneo eliminated defending champion Far Eastern University, 77-72, last Tuesday, despite the absence of Ravena and Nieto.

Nieto was later named Finals MVP after finishing with 22 points and 19 rebounds while Ravena, who chipped in 21 points, was named the tournament MVP after compiling 456 statistical points. Escaler went on to finish with 12 points.

The FEU Baby Tamaraws downed Mapua, 68-63, to finish third.

Joining Ravena, Escaler and Nieto in the First Team are NU’s Mark Dyke and Noah Lugo of Mapua.
