Santiago rips Saraza, bags crown

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Third seed Frances Angela Santiago capped her spectacular run in the Toby’s Sports-Prince Tennis Festival 2013 by conquering second pick Chloe Mae Saraza, 6-0, 6-1, to top the girls 16-under division at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center yesterday.

It was the second straight win by Santiago over a higher ranked opponent after she pulled the rug from under top seed Ma. Dominique Ong, 6-0, 6-3, in the semifinal round of this weeklong tournament presented by Toby’s Sports and Prince, and in cooperation with the Philippine Tennis Association, Equipe, Adidas, Lonsdale, Kangaroos & urbanAthletics.

Ong, however, made up for that loss by topping the girls’ 18-under class, hacking out a hard-earned 7-6 (3), 6-4 victory over Patricia Nicole Paez, who shocked No. 1 Isabella Mendoza, 5-7, 6-2, 6-0, in the semis.

Saraza got back at Santiago, who stunned top seed Rafaella Jean Villanueva, daughter of Phl Davis Cup coordinator Randy Villanueva, 6-1, 6-2, in the semis of the girls’ 14-under finals with a 6-1, 6-3 triumph.

Mikaela Vicencio topped the girls’ 12-under section as she downed No. 2 Alexandra Eala, 6-1, 6-2, while Eurydice Gaspar edged Luis Miguel Vicencio, 7-6 (1), 6-4, to snare the 10-unisex title.

No. 5 Jed Justin Labasano trounced No. 3 Jan Harold Trillanes, 6-2, 7-6 (2), 6-2, and No. 2 Alexander Bulilan beat No. 4 Ramon Wilfred Bentillo, 6-3, 7-5, to seal a title clash in the boys’ 12-under class.

Winners in the non-ranking age divisions were Raymart Sabas (boys 16-under), Elvin Josepg Geluz (boys’ 12-under), Roni Isobelle Ortaliz (girls 16-under) and Michal Blanche Puyot (girls 12-under).
