Phil Younghusband's brace powers Sparks over PSG
MANILA, Philippines – Phil Younghusband fired a brace to power the Loyola Meralco Sparks to a 4-2 victory against PSG Thursday night in the United Football League action at the Emperador Stadium in McKinley Hill.
With the match tied at one goal apiece courtesy of Loyola’s Byeong Yeong Jeol (13th minute) and PSG’s Emmanuel Mbata (22nd minute), Younghusband keyed a second surge by the Sparks to pull away for their 10th win in 13 matches.
The popular Azkals striker scored his first goal of the match just two minutes past the halftime then assisted Matt Hartmann in the 61st minute to extend their lead to 3-1. Younghusband completed his brace performance for the Sparks with a penalty kick conversion in the 81st minute that put the match away.
PSG made it more respectable with a late goal coming from Younousse Yaogo in the injury time for the final tally.
Younghusband’s two-goal romp enabled him to keep in step with the league’s scoring leader Rufo Sanchez of Stallion-Sta. Lucia, 15 to 16. The win, meanwhile, pushed the Sparks back in the second spot with 32 points to overtake Global, which is busy campaigning in the AFC President’s Cup in Cebu City.
Global with a match on hand dropped to third with 31 points as Stallion continue to enjoy its view on top with 36 points.
PSG, meanwhile, remained at seventh spot with 11 points to show on 3-2-8 win-draw-loss card, barely ahead on goal difference over the Green Archers United Globe, who also sport the same record.
