Bulldogs rip Altas on Parks’ heroics

Joey Villar - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - National U, with Bobby Ray Parks Jr. dishing out another superb all-around game, rolled past a hapless Perpetual Help side, 94-65, yesterday to stretch its win run to five in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup at The Arena in San Juan.

Parks, who delivered four key charities to lift the Bulldogs past the fancied FEU Tams, 67-64, last Wednesday, hit five triples this time to highlight his 19-point explosion with the reigning back-to-back UAAP MVP adding six assists before he was taken out late in the third quarter.

“We had a very good start and we’re very happy with how we played,” said NU coach Eric Altamirano, whose charges continued to dominate Group A with a 5-0 mark.

Perpetual Help, which defied the odds by making it to the Final Four in last year’s NCAA, fell to its third straight defeat as Nigerian Femi Babayemi and talented guard Earl Scott Thompson sat out for the third straight game.

Stepping up in the absence of an injured Emmanuel Mbe, 6-7 Cameroonian Alfred Aroga proved unstoppable inside, making six of seven to finish with 13 points. He also had eight boards and two blocks.

In the other game, University of the East bounced back from an 87-89 overtime loss to San Sebastian by beating Emilio Aguinaldo, 97-66.

Sierra Leone’s Charles Mammie, a 6-8 slotman gearing up for his UAAP debut, powered his way to 23 points while crashing the boards with 11 rebounds.

Mammie also dazzled the crowd with a pair of electrifying dunks, including a reverse jam in transition.

Despite the lopsided win, UE mentor Boycie Zamar was far from satisfied.

“Yes, this is a bounce-back win for us,” said Zamar. “But we have to learn that everything should be within the system and not just bounce back for the sake of bouncing back.”

It was UE’s second win in four games.
