Ateneo teams regain lead in Martin Cup

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The defending champion Ateneo-A and Ateneo-B teams bounced from misfortunes they suffered last week with a pair of resounding victories in the ongoing 19th Fr. Martin Summer Cup basketball tournament at the St. Placid gym of the San Beda-Manila on Mendiola.

Kiefer Ravena and Von Pessumal asserted themselves again, delivering 15 and 12 points for Ateneo-A, which escaped with a 59-56 beating of the Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers.

Mikee Cabahug topscored for 20 points while Joma Adornado shot 18 points for Ateneo-B, which prevailed over the Informatics Icons.

With the win, Ateneo-A moved ahead in Group A with their 3-1 win-loss record, and so did Ateneo-B in Group B, according to commissioner Robert de la Rosa.

Ateneo-A earlier took a 50-66 loss to the National University Bulldogs, while Ateneo-B absorbed a 47-58 setback to the San Beda Red Lions.

In other matches, the Fatima University Phoenix pulled off a 94-86 upset over the Letran Knights, in Group A, while the University of Santo Tomas Tigresses walloped AMACU, 94-38, in the women’s action.

In the junior side, Fatima University repulsed Ateneo Blue, 87-52, and UST won over Ateneo White, 79-53.
