Zaragosa, Superal dominate Junior World golf qualifying

MANILA, Philippines - Rupert Zaragosa matched par 72 to run away with the boys’ Class A crown while Princess Superal rallied from behind to beat Daniella Uy and capture the girls diadem in the Pancake House Junior World golf qualifying tournament at the Manila Southwoods Legends course in Carmona, Cavite.

Zaragosa totaled 290 in the four-day tournament, winning by eight over Raymart Tolentino to lead the initial batch of 30 players who gained berths in the Philippine team vying in the Junior World proper in San Diego, California in July.

Tolentino had a 298 after a 77 while Gabriel Manotoc placed third with a 79 for a 303 in the premier division of the Pancake House-sponsored event serving as the third stop of the ICTSI-JGFP Summer Circuit. The event’s other backers were Philippine Golf Foundation, Sizzlin Pepper, Teriyaki Boy and trophies provided by Crystal Catx.

Superal, the spearhead of the ICTSI golf squad, struggled with a 75 but still made it as champion, edging erstwhile leader Daniella Uy by one to capture the girls’ Class A crown with a 298 total.

Uy, who led the premier class with rounds of 75, 73, 73, wilted under pressure and limped home with a 78, finishing with a 299 while Chanelle Avaricio wound up third with a 302 after a 77.

Pauline del Rosario, also of ICTSI team, shot a second straight 71 for a 287 as she dominated Class B. Annika Cedo finished second at 308 after a 78 and del Rosario’s teammate Abby Arevalo wound up third at 310 after a 77.

Sofia Chabon completed the ICTSI team’s sweep by ruling Class C, outlasting Harmie Constantino with a closing 69 to win by two at 281. Constantino carded a 71 for a 283 while Bernice Ilas-Olivarez finished third at 288 after a 70.

Kristoffer Arevalo topped the boys’ Class B with a 282 after a 72, 15 shots ahead of Jets Sajulga, who had a 297 after a 70, while Wei Wei Gao made a 77 for a 298.

Aidric Chan skied to an 80 but still topped the boys’ Class C with a 303, one stroke ahead of Ira Alido, who also had an 80 for a 304 while Marc Corrales finished way back in third at 314 after a 73.

Jojo Magcalayo ruled the boys’ Class D with a 284 after a 72 with Josh Jorge finishing second at 288 after a 75 and Riggs Illescas ending up third with a 73 for a 305.

Sophia Blanco took the girls plum with a 202 after a 65, beating Laila Barro, (80-352) and Margarita Lazatin (102-375).
