SAN DIEGO (AP) — Olympian Gwen Jorgensen became the first US woman to win a World Triathlon Series event Friday at the Omegawave event in Mission Beach.
Jorgensen completed the 1,500-meter swim, 40-kilometer bike and 10-kilometer run in 1 hour, 59 minutes, 59 seconds to also win her first USA Triathlon Elite National Championships title.
"It's a huge honor and it's only going to increase our athletes in the US," Jorgensen said. "It's going to motivate and push other U.S. athletes as well. It's really exciting because it was on US soil."
Britain's Non Stanford edged Australia's Emma Moffatt of Australia in a sprint for second, with both finishing in 2:03:03.
