Dulay earns spot at Pacquiao undercard, British reality show

MANILA, Philippines - Team Insider Boxing Gym’s Recky “The Terror” Dulay stopped veteran Roger Galicia in the third round of a scheduled featherweight eight-rounder at the Makati Cinema Square Boxing Arena last March 22, scoring his fourth straight stoppage in a spotless 5-0 record that may have installed him as the Philippines’ fastest rising boxing pro.

The 19-year-old Dulay, a former national team standout, who turned pro just last year, earned raves for his showing that Pacquiao readily agreed to have him suit up in one of the bouts in the undercard of his next fight, alongside another Team Insider mainstay Gretchen Abaniel, the current Women’s International Boxing Association (WIBA) minimum-weight champion.

Pacquiao fights in September or October this year, most probably in Macau, against a still unnamed opponent.

“He (Dulay) had to win that fight to formalize his stint in the Pacquiao undercard,” said Dulay’s promoter Jonathan Thorp. “And he didn’t just win, he did so convincingly.”

The 5’7” native of Catarman, Northern Samar, caught Galicia, a veteran of 41 fights, with a wicked right cross at 1:02 of the third, to extend his win streak to five, and up his Power Punch record to 80 percent, even better than the 62 percent of Filipino ring icon Pacquiao and the 62.5 percent of super bantamweight king Nonito Donaire Jr.

“Suwerte lang po at nakakita ng opening, kaya sinunggaban ko na,” said Dulay.

Backed by Tune Hotels, Mega Sports World, Savoy Bistro and Team Insider Sports Bar and managed by Christer Bigander, Dulay earned another feather in his cap when he was chosen to be part of a four-man boxing team that will take on top British boxers in a reality boxing show late this year tentatively titled “Great Britain vs The Philippines.” Three other Filipino boxers will come from various boxing stables in the country, led by Pacquiao’s MP Promotions and Team Insider Boxing Gym.

The slugfest, which will be promoted by Matchroom Sports of Barry Hearn and John McDonald, and will be aired on Sky Sports and the Philippines, via various cable networks, will have four Filipino boxers taking on their British counterparts in a one-day showdown. Winners advance against victors from both sides, until there is one man left standing.

“If he performs well in that show, he is on his way to stardom. He has the total package like Nonito and Pacquiao, he is good looking, charismatic, talented and is really an exciting fighter,” said Thorp.

Dulay began his career with a unanimous decision win against Valeriano Gabriel last Aug. 16, 2012 in Lemery, Batangas. He began his four-bout KO spree a month later against Mon Abuero (TKO Round 3 of a 4-rounder), before stopping his next three foes – Gilbert Donasales (4-5, 1KO), Tata Galindez (1-9, 1KO) and then Galicia (24-14, 3KOs).
