MANILA, Philippines - Boracay Rum unleashed a torrid scoring run in the third period as it thumped Jumbo Plastic, 87-67, to move to solo third in the PBA D-League Foundation Cup at The Arena in San Juan City yesterday.
Jeff Viernes keyed the Waves’ third quarter breakaway, pouring in nine of his 18 points that saw them bounce back from a 37-38 halftime deficit and into a 65-60 lead on their way to a second straight win following an opening game setback to the Cebuana Lhuillier Gems last week.
Earlier, Raymund Maconocido scored 16 points and Mike Parala added 14 markers and 15 rebounds as Café France rallied past Informatics, 84-77, in overtime.
The Bakers bucked poor shooting and battled back from an 11-point deficit with 7:42 remaining in regulation to force overtime as they held the Icons to just one field goal in the fourth.
Cafe France scored the first nine points in the extra period and held on the rest of the way to snap a five-game losing streak dating back to the elimination of the Aspirant’s Cup.
“We played bad defensively in the first half. But the guys picked up their game after halftime. I thought Jumbo being new is still feeling their way and we capitalized on it,†said Boracay Rum coach Lawrence Chongson.
Jaymo Eguilos hit 13 points and Raymund Ilagan grabbed 10 rebounds as Boracay Rum dominated the boards, 46-39.
Aljon Mariano topscored for the Giants for the third straight game with 14 points. Marvin Hayes added 12 for the Jumbo Plastic, which shot just 27 percent (10 of 36) in the second half and fell to 1-2 (win-loss) record.
