Agojo falls vs fancied Lee in semis
MANILA, Philippines - Jayvie Agojo toppled No. 4 Nadine Smith, 2&1, but fell short of her bid against world No. 2 Minjee Lee, 2&1, and bowed out of the semifinal round of the Western Australia Women’s State Amateur at the Royal Fremantle Golf Club in Fremantle, Western Australia Saturday.
It was a sorry setback for the top ICTSI-The Country Club ace, who held her ground against the top seeded Lee, whom she battled in a see-sawing match until she lost her putting touch in the closing holes where she flubbed a couple of putts from close range.
Agojo, who finished No. 5 in the 36-hole stroke play elims, turned in a solid game against Smith in their quarterfinal duel and looked headed for a big upset against Lee in the early going of their semis clash which she kept close but just couldn’t pull it through in the end.
Cyna Rodriguez earlier bowed out in the quarters, dropping an equally heartbreaking loss on the first extra hole against No. 2 Hannah Green.
Lee faces Tatiana Wijaya for the crown after the latter subdued Green, 3&1.
