MANILA, Philippines - The Lloyd Mcdermott Rugby Development Team (LMRDT) headed by its Australian coach recently spent the whole afternoon teaching teenagers at the Tuloy sa Don Bosco Foundation in Alabang to play the rugby game – a sport that is strongly popular in Australia, Europe and Americas.
It was balmy afternoon, when the smell of freshly-cut trees and green spiders and red ants wafted in the playground of Tuloy Foundation. Several wards of the foundation watched the game and the teenage Filipino players felt at home with their Australian coaches as this was the second coaching session with them. The first one was done last year. Even the Tuloy Foundation head, Father Rocky Evangelista watched the game.
Before the Tuloy sa Don Bosco Foundation coaching, the LMRDT team members also went to Davao City to teach youth of the Davao Durians Team to play rugby.
The Australia Team is under the sponsorship of Sagittarius Mines Inc. (SMI) and Xstrata Copper which advocate the development of underprivileged youth in communities. Xstrata supports the Lloyd McDermott Rugby Development Team and the Australian Rugby Union in promoting the sport of rugby among young Australian men and women of indigenous background.
Part of SMI and Xstrata’s corporate social involvement is supporting the development of the youth within communities through various programs especially in the field of sports. Xstrata is pleased to support this team on its second visit to the Philippines and SMI will be their official host during their stay in Manila.
