West Australia AM: Jayvie, Cyna make match play

Jayvie Agojo

MANILA, Philippines - Jayvie Agojo and Cyna Rodriguez struggled with 76 and 75, respectively, but safely made it to the match play phase of the Western Australia Women’s State Amateur at the Royal Fremantle Golf Club in Fremantle, Western Australia Thursday.

Agojo opened with an even-par 73 in the 36-hole stroke play elims Wednesday but hobbled with four bogeys against a lone birdie for a three-over 76 at the long layout for a 149. The top ICTSI-The Country Club bet landed at No. 5 heading to the knockout stage featuring the top 16 players.

Rodriguez, on the other hand, strung up a pair of 75s for a 150, ending up No. 7 in a field towed by fancied Minjee Lee, who closed out with a 140 after a 72.

Agojo, the reigning Santi Cup individual gold medalist, faces Aussie Claudia Pisano in the match play after the latter wound up with a 159 after a 78 for No. 12 while Rodriguez, the former Philippine Ladies Open champion, will take on Ebony Heard, who made two 78s for a 156 for 10th.

Agojo mixed one birdie with one bogey in the first round to trail the two-time champion Lee, who sizzled with a 68, by five but wavered on her way home in the second round with three bogeys in the last six holes.

Rodriguez had a rollercoaster round of four birdies and six bogeys in the first round and hardly improved in the second day with two birdies against two bogeys and a double-bogey.
