Petronas dragfest unwraps in Clark

MANILA, Philippines - The second leg of the 2013 Petronas Philippine Drag Racing Championship Northern Series gets going Saturday with a stellar field, headed by the country’s leading drivers, clashing for top honors at the Clark International Speedway in Pampanga.

The reversals and surprises in the first two races could inspire the surge of the lesser-lights again in the event sanctioned by the Automobile Association Philippines (AAP) and sponsored by Petronas, Yokohama, GT Radials, M&H Tires and media partner Racing Beat at Wave 89.1.

Teofilo Edwin Cayco of H3 Autoworks stole the thunder from the big guns as he humbled seven-time national champion and reigning titlist Jonathan Tiu of JCT-Blanche Racing in the Quick division in Clark two months ago.

Although Tiu redeemed himself by capturing the M&H Super Pro title, the other classes saw younger drivers stamp their class against more experienced and perennial winners.

Former teen sensation Arvin Jay Millet of TEMZ, now 20, bagged the M&H Pro title in the season opener, snatching not only the Yokohama Expert crown but also the M&H Pro title in the Southern Series for the second straight time.

Also expected to shine are Kenneth Alonte of RSL Motorsports, who turned back the top guns to rule the Yokohama Expert class in the Clark kickoff leg with Carl Reyes posting a near-impossible feat by bouncing back from the losers circle to win the Sportsman title against 75 other rivals.

In Batangas, another talented teener Christian Paul Gutierrez of Street Tuners became the latest sensation, impressing the crowd with his talents that netted him the Sportsman crown in just his second competitive race against 67 more experienced rivals.

Terenz Horminosa of HP and Michael Galang of Just Racing also made their marks by winning the GT Radial Hotstreet title in Clark and Batangas, respectively.
