Cancer survivor makes impressive comeback

MANILA, Philippines - Cancer survivor Arvin Drueco came out of a long layoff and turned in a third place finish in the Grid B category of the 2013 Circuit Showdown at the Batangas Racing Circuit recently.

Drueco, a former ace karter and Formula driver who inked an inspiring story in Philippine motorsports with his victory over brain cancer, put up a strong stand aboard his stock Toyota Corolla GLi against the much favored Honda and Sylvia cars of 26 other drivers.

But he spun out at the backstretch after his brake pads gave in with one lap to go.

“This was just an experimental comeback and although we didn’t finish the race, it feels good to know that I’m still in top form,” said Drueco, who campaign is backed by National Motor Oil and Brake Fluids, AER Engines, DNA Motoring and Drueco Auto Supply.

With the inspiring outcome of this stint, we might join more competitive events like the Philippine Grand Touring Car Championship hopefully with suitable accessories and better equipment,” said Drueco.

He was then making a big name as a potential future racing champion when he was forced to quit by the life-threatening condition at age 17 and had to go a series of chemotherapy sessions.

Upon learning that Drueco was back in shape, long-time karting and Formula Toyota mentor Edgen Dy-liacco prodded him to race again.
