MANILA, Philippines - The Petronas Philippine Drag Racing Championship Southern Series kicks off Saturday in Batangas with a battle royale expected from the country’s leading dragsters at the Batangas Racing Circuit.
The event hopes to draw more than 145 drivers who showed up in the recent Clark kickoff with the Batangas-based racers joining the title chase in the event sanctioned by the Automobile Association Philippines (AAP).
BRC pioneers Autokeeps, Just Racing, Sherwin Esguerra’s SE Racing, Jywell Comet, Team Batangas, Lowtoys, Ger&Friends and Montavita have lined up their top drivers for the Quick 8, M&H Pro, Yokohama Expert, Sportsman and the GT Radial Hotstreet classes, ensuring an all-out battle for drag racing supremacy.
While defending champion Jonathan Tiu of JCT-Blanche Racing salvaged the M&H Super Pro crown in Clark, rival and former champion Martin Manalo and the other RSL Motorsports bets try to keep the local bets’ reign at home in the event sponsored by Petronas, Yokohama, GT Radials, M&H Tires and media partner Racing Beat at Wave 89.1.
Tiu and Manalo are tipped to clash for the premiere Quick 8 and M&H Pro crowns with the former’s existing BRC Drag Strip quarter-mile record of 9.903 seconds on the line.
Teofilo Edwin Cayco of H3 Autoworks guns for a second straight victory following his Quick 8 title upset over Tiu in Clark while young Arvin Jay Millet of TEMZ also seeks back-to-back wins in the M&H Pro division.
