Pres Cup netfest unwraps in Bacolod

MANILA, Philippines - Competitions in the Philta-Palawan Pawnshop Regional age-group tennis circuit go a notch higher when the President Cup unfolds beginning today in Bacolod with the leading players and rising stars in the Visayas region seeing action at the Center Court, Grandslam Court and Manville.

The event, spread over five days, is sanctioned by the organizing Philippine Tennis Association as a Group 2 tournament which serves as the championship leg of the circuit’s Western Visayas swing.

“We put up this event for the players from Negros and Panay Island and nearby provinces who need not go to Manila to compete in top-level tournaments,” said Philta president Rep. Edwin Olivarez under whose honor the event is held.

Winners and the other top finishers in the first four legs of the circuit in Capiz, Iloilo, Aklan and La Carlota City are all expected to vie for top honors in the boys’ and girls’ 18-, 16-, 14-, 12-and-under divisions and the 10-unisex category.

“With Palawan Pawnshop and Technosports support, we have lined up a series of tournaments in other regions as part of our commitment to help develop the sport and discover new talents,” said Olivarez.

Palawan Pawnshop COO Bobby Castro and Guillermo Nocom, president of Technosports, exclusive distributor of Babolat equipment, reiterated their support to Philta and tennis in their joint effort to help produce future national players.

Registration for the President Cup is still ongoing with deadline set at 12 noon today, according to Philta referee and tournament-in-charge Bobby Mangunay. For details, text or call Mangunay at 0195-4046464 or email bobbymangunay@yahoo.com.

Meanwhile, tennis action shifts into full gear on March 1-17 with the staging of the Olivarez-Philta Open age group, inter-collegiate and interclub championships at the Olivarez Sports Center in Sucat, Parañaque.
