Icons, Maroons move closer to Martin Cup semis

MANILA, Philippines -- The Informatics Icons stopped the Mapua Cardinals, 61-57, while the University of the Philippines Maroons turned back the University of Perpetual Help-A Altas, 63-56, in the quarterfinals of the 9th Fr. Martin Cup Collegiate Open basketball tournament.

Mark Montano tallied 25 points for the Icons after they hurdled the Cardinals at the Trinity University of Asia gymnasium in Quezon City.
       
The Icons advanced to the second playoff phase of the quarterfinals with the Maroons.
       
The Jonathan Reyes-coached Icons, who placed third in Group B with their 4-2 win-loss record, earned the right to meet the top seed Adamson Falcons for a semifinals berth.

Julius Wong topscored for the Maroons with 16 as he helped them finished fifth in Group A and arranged a clash with second- ranked Letran for the semis slot in their bracket.
