MANILA, Philippines – Former NBA MVP Allen Iverson declined an offer from the Dallas Mavericks to play for their NBA D-League team affiliate.
Iverson, who played most of his career with the Philadelphia 76ers, addressed the situation via his social networking account on Twitter.
“I thank Donnie (Nelson) and Dallas for the consideration and while I think the D-League is a great opportunity, it is not the route for me,†Iverson tweeted.
The 2001 MVP last played in the NBA in March 2010 with the Philadelphia 76ers when he suddenly retired to attend to his sick daughter. He has not come back since that brief return to the team that originally drafted him after stints with the Denver Nuggets and the Memphis Grizzlies.
Also popularly known as the ‘The Answer’, Iverson had a short stop with a professional team in Turkey and played in exhibition games in China after his abrupt semi-retirement from the NBA.
Iverson thinks his career is not over and wants to return to the NBA although he also stated that he has himself to blame for the lack of potential NBA suitors.
â€I realize my actions contributed to my early departure from the NBA, should God provide me another opportunity I will give it my all,†he said.
The 11-time All-Star said that he still has unfinished business in the league.
“My dream has always been to complete my legacy in the NBA,†said the 37-year old player out of Georgetown University.
Iverson addressed his fans in his personal account with over 400,000 followers that although he wants to come back, the decision is not entirely up to him.
“To my fans, I love yall! Not a day goes by that I am not asked when am I coming back, we all must accept my return is not up to just me,†he ended in his series of tweets.
Iverson was a four-time NBA scoring champion and the smallest player to lead the league in scoring. He has career averages of 26.7 points, 6.2 assists, 2.2 steals and 41.1 minutes per game.
