The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines -  The World Slasher Cup Invitational 8-cock derby, featuring the world’s leading game fowl breeders, will be held Jan. 21-27 with more 300 entries expected to vie for top honors at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

To accommodate the big number of entries, organizers decided to hold the event for one whole week, a first time in the bi-annual meet.

The three separate two-cock eliminations will be on Jan. 21 for the first 100 entries while the second 100 will clash on Jan. 22 (second 100 entries) and the rest on Jan. 23.

The two-cock semis is set on Jan. 24 for the Jan. 21 qualifiers and those who score 0, 0.5 or 1 point on Jan. 22, while the second semis playdate is slated Jan. 25 for the Jan. 23 winners and all those entries with scores of 1.5 or 2 points from Jan. 22. The four-cock finals will be held Jan. 26 to the morning of Jan. 27.

Rey Briones of Masbate and former Rep. Lawrence Wacnang of Tabuk, Kalinga, both top endorsers of Thunderbird, won the WSC-1 last year and are expected to banner the local challenge along with solo WSC-2 champion Mayor Panganiban.

Ray Alexander from Alabama, Wilber Le Blanc and Richard Harris from Louisiana, Jorge Torres and Jorge Goitia from California, Gil Canlas and Paul Chino Canlas from Texas, and Jeff Hudspeth from North Carolina head the foreign field in the previous WS editions.

Others tipped to field in their top-notch entries are Greg Berin, Joey Melendres, and Rene Penalosa from Australia, and Mark Salazar from Malaysia.

The 2013 World Slasher’s Cup Invitational 8-cock derby is presented by the Pintakasi of Champions and backed by major sponsors Thunderbird, B-Meg, Sagupaan, and Supremo.
