Jarencio stays as Tigers coach

Olmin Leyba - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Pido Jarencio, who steered University of Santo Tomas to a runner-up finish in the UAAP Season 75 men’s basketball tourney and the title in the Philippine Collegiate Champions League, will continue to call the shots for the Tigers in 2013.

“Siya (Jarencio) pa rin ang hahawak sa Tigers (Jarencio will still handle the Tigers),” UST athletic moderator Rod Sambuang said yesterday.

The announcement came amid talks that the former King Goldie in the 80s and champion mentor in 2006 is seriously considering to leave the Tigers at the end of his term in March. There were reports he was being eyed for a coaching position with Barako Bull in the PBA but this apparently bogged down with Rajko Toroman reportedly set to get that job.

Jarencio himself said he is sticking with the Tigers, who target the UAAP diadem next season.

“UST pa din ako (I’m still with UST),” said Jarencio, who will have at his disposal a solid crew led by Jeric Teng, Karim Abdul, Clark Bautista and Kevin Ferrer as they contend for the next UAAP hostilities against five-peat champ Ateneo, which has a new coach in Bo Perasol, semifinalists La Salle and National U, and Far Eastern, which is rebuilding under new mentor Nash Racela.

Meanwhile, a coaching change transpired over at the women’s volleyball competitions yesterday.

FEU athletic director Mark Molina announced that Kid Santos took over as Lady Tams head coach beginning yesterday, replacing Nes Pamilar, who led the Morayta-based volleybelles to the tiara in 2008.
