MVP reelected unopposed as SBP prexy
MANILA, Philippines – Manny V. Pangilinan got a fresh mandate as Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas president after he was elected by acclamation by the board of trustees at the multi-purpose hall of the Meralco Gym today.
In his speech, the man popularly known as MVP – who also chairs the Amatuer Boxing Association of the Philippines – stressed grassroots development as his main program in his new four-year term.
“We may need another strategic planning session to plan more grassroots projects,” said Pangilinan, drawing a loud applause from those in attendance, including FIBA representative Ben Turner.
"We could have done more for grassroots, but in the whole, it was a good four years, we could do better though,” he added.
Pangilinan also pointed to more communication with all stakeholders as one of his priorities.
“This (communication) is essential if we are to stay focused and united,” he said. “We continue to see this need for cooperation in the formation of national teams where scheduling issues at times, at almost all levels – professional, collegiate, age groups – arise.”
“It is time for SBP to move on to its next and higher stage of development – enabled by a fresh vision and even fresher vigor,” he added.
While MVP got a the nod of the 25-man board, which came from all over the country, the rest of the officers and aspiring candidates would have to be elected in the formal polls that will be scheduled later.
Reports, however, point to no major changes in the current SBP roster with incumbent chair and Misamis Oriental Gov. Oscar Moreno, Maynilad Water president and vice chair and ABAP chief Ricky Vargas, board secretary Marievic Anonuevo and treasurer Dr. Jay Adalem expected to get re-elected.
And Moreno is optimistic of the country's rise in the Asian scene with MVP's new term.
“There were some conflicts the first four years,” said Moreno. “Hopefully, there will be more unity and cooperation now.”
