Marquez all tied up in Mexico

Abac Cordero - The Philippine Star

HOUSTON – Juan Manuel Marquez is being paraded around Mexico like he brought home the World Cup.

The 39-year-old boxer who stunned the world when he knocked out Manny Pacquiao in Las Vegas has yet to put his feet up since flying home last Monday.

He’s been everywhere, visiting the Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto and presenting the country’s highest official with the pair of gloves he used in the fight.

Marquez also presented his training jacket to the president.

It’s been a very busy week for Marquez, and it seems he’s not used to the accolade. He’s not really complaining but is wondering when it will stop.

“He said he still hasn’t enjoyed time with his family especially his kids. He’s been in and out of the house all the time,” said Top Rank’s Ricardo Jimenez.

“Everybody’s taking him to all these places. He’s been doing so many interviews and TV guestings and satellite feeds to the United States,” Jimenez added.

According to his strength and conditioning coach, Angel Hernandez, the Mexican boxer wants to rest for two months and enjoy all his time with his family.

Then he wants to get busy in the gym and stay in shape because he may fight sometime in June. If it’s not Pacquiao then he should pick an easy fight.

Marquez was supposed to come here to rally behind countryman Jorge Arce against another Filipino, Nonito Donaire Jr.

“He couldn’t do it anymore. He’s all tied up in Mexico,” said Jimenez.
