Gonzaga, Ceballos reign in beach volley

MANILA, Philippines - Jovelyn Gonzaga and Fiola Mae Ceballos of Central Philippines University bested eight other teams to rule the first PVF Women’s Beach Volleyball National Invitational before a huge crowd at the Cantada Sports Center’s sand courts in Bagumbayan, Taguig City recently.

Tagum City’s Lourdelyn Catubag and Karen Kay Quilario also turned in an impressive performance and finished second while the Metro Manila team of Angela Benting and Nerissa Bautista and the Pangasinan tandem of Jennifer Manzano and Cindy Benitez wound up joint third.

Other teams which participated in the event put up by industrialist/sportsman Lucio “Bong” Tan Jr. and sanctioned by the Philippine Volleyball Federation were Dela Salle University-Dasmariñas, Philippine Air Force, University of the East, Rizal Technological University and University of St. La Salle-Bacolod.

The two-day invitational was organized by PVF director Edgardo “Boy” Cantada and sportsman Gerard Cantada. The organizers provided complimentary air tickets, provincial land transportation, board and lodging and other assistance to the participants who were billeted at the Cantada Sports Center.

The games will be telecast at a later date nationwide on Pinoy Extreme on Destiny Cable and worldwide on ABS-CBN Global Limited’s The Filipino Channel.
