MANILA, Philippines - Unbeaten NCAA champion San Beda College and UAAP titlist Far Eastern University-Diliman dispute one of four semis berths tomorrow, highlighting the quarterfinal round of the first Philippine Secondary Schools Basketball Championship (PSSBC) at the Chiang Kai Shek College gym in Manila.
The early faceoff by the fancied Red Cubs and Baby Tamaraws in the playoffs came on the heels of FEU’s roller-coaster ride in the elims, where it wound up with a 2-2 card despite superb performances by back-to-back UAAP MVP winner Jerie Pingoy.
In contrast, San Beda, behind Arvin Tolentino, JV Mocom, Alejandro Inigo and Joshua Caracut, swept its group elims assignments and will go into their 1:30 match with the Baby Tams oozing with confidence.
Also on tap in the four-game bill is the showdown between Metro Manila Tiong Lian Basketball Association (MMTLBA) rivals Hope Christian High School and Xavier School.
The Hope Christians, who finished runner-up to Chiang Kai Shek College early this year, and the Golden Stallions clash at 12 noon with the former hoping to cash in on their slight edge in manpower.
The CKSC Dragons, on the other hand, take on the Letran Squires at 9 a.m. while NCAA runner-up San Sebastian College-Recoletos battles University of Santo Tomas at 10:30 a.m. in the event sponsored by Dickies Underwear, MEC Networks, Jumbo Plastic Linoleum, Blackwater Sports, Wrangler, Welcoat House Paints, Ironcon Builders and Hapee Toothpaste.
