MANILA, Philippines – Brian Viloria scored a 10th round technical knockout victory over Hernan Marquez in a thrilling bout to successfully unify the WBO and WBA flyweight titles at the Sports Arena in Los Angeles, California today.
The end came at 1:01 of Round 10 when, after Viloria decked Marquez earlier with a left hook to the head, the Filipino-American repeatedly tagged the Mexican with several unanswered blows, prompting Marquez's corner to throw in the towel.
Viloria knocked down Marquez once each in the first round and fifth rounds. The Mexican though had some moments in the fight, forcing his foe to back up at times.
Marquez had Viloria in trouble in the fifth canto, peppering his foe with a flurry of blows. The Filipino-American then unloaded a 1-2 combination that sent Marquez down to steal the round.
"The Hawaiian Punch” improved to 32-3 (19 knockouts) while Marquez dropped to 34-3 (25 knockouts).
