Nuvali hosts King of Wake Republ1c 2012 this weekend

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The world’s finest wakeboard competitors will vie for top honors in Asia’s hottest wakeboarding event of the year – the King of Wake Republ1c 2012 – which will be held at the Republ1c Wake Park at Nuvali, Calamba, Laguna, this weekend.

Among the top international riders expected to rock this event are Thailand-based British national Daniel Grant, who made waves when he became the youngest rider to win the World Wakepark Championship when he was just 12 years old; American Jeff McKee, one of 10 riders to set a Guinness World Record for riding non-stop for 24 hours; and Australian James Windsor, winner of the 2012 Monster Energy WWA Wake Park Triple Crown.

Windsor is also the winner in the Junior men’s division of the WWA Park World Series and currently ranked third in the Wake Park World Series. Other seasoned international and local riders will also see action starting tomorrow up to Sunday.

The King of Wake 2012 at Republ1c Wake Park is the third stop of the Asian Wake Park Tour organized by the World Wake Association (WWA). This leg of the tour is bound to create a big splash with great talents from the different continents.

American Jeff McKee, an eco-freak and wakeboard fun-chaser, will be joined by Texans and Shredtown’s pro winch riders Chris Abadie and Andrew Adams; Canadians Wake Lab title holder Ollie Derome; and Manu Rupp from Germany.

Veteran riders from Australia are also expected to make a strong showing, starting with Matty Hasler, the first-ever rider to land a Heelside 1260 on cable. Another Aussie royalty colliding head-on with these names is Australia’s Best Female Cable Wakeboarder of the Year awardee Angelika Schriber, who will banner for women riders.

Organizers of this WWA-sanctioned international event are the same ones who brought to the Philippines the 2008 and 2009 World Wakeboard Championships and the Ultimate Wake Championship, the last leg of the WWA Wake Park World Series.

The competition is expected to be intense as young pro riders such as the 14-year-old Grant and the 17-year-old Windsor will go all out against their more seasoned counterparts.

Up for grabs at the King of Wake 2012 are four major cable divisions: Pro Men’s, Pro Women’s, Pro Wakeskate, and Obstacles Only, with more than $20,000 worth of prize money is at stake.

Top riders from the World Wakeboard Association (WWA) will complete the judging panel - Pro wakeboarder and Pro Tour winner Chad Sharpe, WWA president and co-founder Shannon Starling, veteran rider Donald Shelbrick, and WWA rider and blogger Rob Corum.

The evenings sizzle with awesome parties at Republ1c Wake Park with free-flowing drinks, games, and a fashion show, followed by a fireworks display to wrap up each night.
