MANILA, Philippines - Roehl Nadurata, a fixture in the national team in the 60s who later on became Yeng Guiao’s trusted lieutenant in coaching, passed away due to complications of lung cancer Tuesday night.
He was 74.
A well-loved basketball personality, Nadurata earned praises and tributes on the legacy he left behind.
Guiao, the fiery mentor Nadurata helped win six PBA championships in their enduring coaching partnership, said he lost not just an assistant but “a second father” and friend.
Guiao also said he won’t forget Nadurata for his unwavering loyalty.
The two were together from their Swift Mighty Meaty days to Guiao’s stint as PBL commissioner, their return to the PBA via the Red Bull ball club and until Nadurata fell ill a few days after they steered Rain or Shine to its first PBA championship.
“I was about to transfer to Pepsi from Swift, and he had the option to stay with Swift because he’s close with Mr. (Rafael) Hechanova, the uncle of Joey (Concepcion). But he chose to join me at Pepsi. We were inseparable since then,” said Guiao.
“He stuck with me through good times and bad times. Everything will be different now. It’s like I lost my right hand and most of all, I lost my most loyal friend,” Guiao said.
Guiao acknowledged Nadurata’s great contributions in his triumphs. “He contributed a lot and I appreciate it so much,” said Guiao.
Several players also paid tribute and expressed appreciation on the basketball knowledge and wisdom imparted them by Nadurata.
