Calvin “The Beast” Abueva, the second overall pick of the 2012 PBA Draft by the Alaska Aces, is set to make his professional debut in the upcoming All-Filipino Cup this month.
“The Beast” has been wreaking havoc in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) since 2007, accomplishing everything a collegiate star dreams of.
The Pampanga native already won a championship with the San Sebastian Golden Stags, a Most Valuable Player plum, and would have won his second award this year if not for a suspension, which disqualified him in the race for the most coveted individual award.
The 6-foot-3 dynamo is one of the best college players in the last decade, proving to be a man among boys each time he steps on the court with his relentless motor, incredible leaping ability and in-your-face attitude. These traits have helped him dominate the NCAA and the PBA-D League.
Over the years, Abueva, also a player of NLEX the D-League, has improved from a rebounding menace to a complete player who has a few if any weaknesses at all in his game.
“The Beast” can go coast to coast and dish off to a teammate, soar for a magnificent offensive rebound and put it back in against larger opponents, shoot from the outside, defend the opposing team’s best player regardless of their position, and simply outplay those who match up with him.
To further highlight Abueva’s all-around ability, this season alone in the NCAA, he has already compiled three triple-doubles. Calvin has made the Fil-Oil Flying V Arena a personal playground this season, dominating like no other college player could in the Philippines.
PBA fans will be in for a treat as “The Beast” will bang bodies with bigger and stronger foes in the professional level. Abueva might not replicate his dominance in the collegiate circuit but rest assured, he will play 100 percent and outhustle whoever is put in front of him.
