Wack Wack downs Canlubang, cops Fed League crown
MANILA, Philippines - Wack Wack came out of a struggle in the away game snorting fire at home, beating Canlubang, 6-4, to retain the Men’s Federation Golf League championship last weekend.
The Mandaluyong club escaped with a 3-2 decision at Canlubang with all five matches going all the way to the closing holes and secured the win the next day via the same result but in a more decisive fashion.
Thus, Wack Wack golfers earned their third championship after bagging its maiden win in 2001 that made them the second winningest club in the league. Only Riviera, which lost in the quarterfinals, has more titles with four.
Gabriel Manotoc, Sammy Sy and John Gobing all went 2-for-2 in the finals to key the Wack Wack victory.
Manotoc and his best-ball partner Jasper Go delivered the winning point for Wack Wack on the last hole at Canlubang.
Marcelo and Oliver Gan went 2 up in scramble whole Gobing and Sy whipped up a 2 and 1 result in aggregate.
Steady rains made conditions difficult on the final fight day of the season but Wack Wack was not to be denied.
Gobing and Sy secured the first point in aggregate with a 6 and 5 tally but Canlubang threatened through Gooby Yulo-Abe Rosal and Jonas Magcalayo-Joey Huerva in the greensomes and high-low, respectively.
Gabriel Manotoc and brother Matthew then came to the rescue and led partners Manny Angeles (best ball) and Hubert Lim (scramble) to a 4 and 3 triumph and 2-up squeaker, respectively, that settled the outcome.
Canlubang posted its best finish in the league after advancing to the title playoffs for the first time and topping the eliminations with the best record.
In the semifinals, Wack Wack survived Eastridge while Canlubang whipped Valley.
