Lyceum-Batangas raps Letran-Calamba

MANILA, Philippines -  Lyceum University of the Philippines-Batangas-l held off Letran-Calamba, 25-16, 25-20, 27-25, to notch its second straight win for a share of the lead in the men’s division of the 14th NCAA South volleyball tournament at the Lyceum International Maritime Academy gym in Batangas City last weekend.

Handled by former national standout Bob Malenab, the Pirates outhit the Knights in the first two before hanging tough to in the third to complete the straight-set win and tie First Asia Institute of Technology and Humanities-Tanauan at the helm.

Letran-Calamba took its first setback after back-to-back wins in the event, the country’s biggest league south of Manila which coincides with the 44th founding anniversary of the host school.

Philippine Christian University-Dasmariñas snapped a three-game losing streak by repulsing La Salle-Lipa, 19-25, 25-17, 25-23, 25-15, in the other men’s match.

The Lady Pirates also beat the Letran-Calamba volleybelles in straight sets for their second win in row behind pacesetting Perpetual Help-Laguna (3-0).

The Saints whipped San Beda College Alabang, 25-14, 25-15, 25-15, to remain unbeaten. It was the Lionesses’ first loss in three starts.

The Lady Green Chevrons also avenged the loss of their men’s team by outclassing the Lady Dolphins, 25-11, 25-19, 25-17, boosting their record to 2-1 while dealing their rivals their third straight loss.

University of Batangas  (2-2) defeated league newcomer Saint Francis of Assisi College (0-3), 25-16, 25-17, 25-19, in the only other women’s game.

In girls volley action, La Salle-Lipa chalked up its second straight win as it trounced PCU-Dasma, 25-7, 25-9, 25-5.
