Tigers, Tams hope to keep t'kwondo titles
MANILA, Philippines - Taekwondo action in the UAAP kicks off today at The Arena in San Juan with UST and FEU out to keep their titles in the men’s and ladies divisions, respectively.
The Growling Tigers went undefeated in five matches in the elims last year to clinch their 10th title overall.
“We strive hard to get all the titles every year, that’s our ultimate goal,” said UST coach Dindo Simpao.
The three-day event will also feature the debut of tournament newcomer National University, which will field in some former Palarong Pambansa standouts to boost its campaign.
The Tigers are expected to face a stiff challenge again from 2010 champions La Salle.
In the distaff side, the Lady Tamaraws, who ruled two of the last three editions, are looking to stave off a big fightback from the Tigresses, who are aiming to improve their fourth place.
“We will try to get it back this year,” said Simpao on UST, the winningest women’s squad with 11 championships.
The Tiger Cubs, meanwhile, are gunning for a three-peat in the juniors division.
UST is also out to defend its crown in the poomsae event, which was introduced as a demonstration event last year.
The Season 75 has already produced three champions last weekend, including UST (women’s beach volleyball), NU (men’s beach volleyball) and Ateneo (women’s badminton).
Competitions in swimming and table tennis are set to begin later this month, while judo is set to open early next month.
