MANILA, Philippines – The country’s finest drivers plunge into action for crucial wins that will enhance their title quests in the fifth and penultimate leg of the 2012 Yokohama Philippine GT Championship Series this Sunday at the Batangas Racing Circuit.
Defending champion Vincent Floirendo and Jody Coseteng gear up for another showdown in the event sanctioned by the Automobile Association Philippines and sponsored by official tires Yokohama, official oil Torco Racing Oil and Racing Beat@Wave 89.1.
Meanwhile, Kizuko Hirota faces tough challengers in the third leg of the Wind Formula Philippines 2012.
Floirendo, currently second overall with 157 points, will go for a sweep of both the sprint and final races in the GT300 class to boost his campaign for back-to-back crowns.
On the other hand, Coseteng, who won several touring car titles, guns for his first GT plum after grabbing the solo lead with 168 points, 11 points up on Floirendo.
Multi-titled driver Jojo Silverio and rookie Stefano Marcelo, on the other hand, try to bounce back from heart-breaking losses in the past races.
Silverio needs to sweep his events to amass points that will lift him up from sixth place in the standings with 72 points.
Marcelo, currently in third place with Arnel Carlos with 100 points, lost valuable points in the last race when he failed to start of the competition proper due to engine trouble.
Carlos is also gunning for a win to keep the solo lead in the GT200 class over his son Dwight Kevin Carlos and Micky Kim of TRS-Castrol, who won in his GT 200 debut in the last race.
Others fancied in the event are Taysan, Batangas Mayor Don Don Portugal in the GT130 class against Ross Jackes of Castrol-TRS, Bayani Vargas and Jojo Lavinia, and Allen Macaraig who is seeking a repeat over Ace San Agustin in the GT100 division.
Rodney Caballero, Sebastian Jose Donato and Raniel Ortiz, meanwhile, go for wins in their respective divisions in the Philminiracers Classic while Carlos Castaneda and Bryan Bautista are fancied in the 2012 VW Kafer Cup.
