Que makes cut in Swiss Alps

- The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Angelo Que finally made the cut on a European Tour event in three tries, carding a second straight even par 71 in the Omega European Masters at Crans-sur-Sierre in the Swiss Alps late Friday.

Que, who settled for an opening 71 despite hitting an eagle, overcame a bogey-bogey mishap from No. 4 with a three-birdie string from No. 8 although he dropped another stroke on No. 11 before stringing a run of pars the rest of the way.

That proved enough to get the power-hitting Filipino to the weekend play of the rich event although at 142, he stood nine strokes off Frenchman Julien Quesne, who sizzled with a 65 to grab a one-stroke lead over England’s Danny Willett at 133.

Willett shot a second 67 for a 134 while Scot Paul Lawrie fired a 66 for third at 135.

Que, who missed the cut here last year, appeared headed for another failed campaign after bogeying Nos. 4 and 5. But the former Philippine Open champion and three-time leg winner on the Asian Tour bounced back by birdying the par-3 eighth for the second straight day.

He then birdied the par-5 ninth, which he bogeyed the previous round, and then gunned down another birdie on No. 10 for the second time.

He had a couple of near misses the rest of the way but was happy to settle with pars and gain a stint in the final two rounds.

First day leader Gregory Bourdy skied to a 75 after a sterling 63 and dropped to joint 13th at 138 with 13 others.
