Manila, Philippines - Filipino-Chinese Veterans Basketball Association (FCVBA) outclassed Philippine Chinese Friendship Basketball League (PCFBL), 100-73, to retain its title in the 40-years-and-above division in the 21st ASEAN Veterans Basketball Tournament Saturday at the National Indoor Stadium in Brunei.
Former UE coach Lawrence Chongson fired 21 points to lead FCVBA’s two-game sweep of its division in the annual tournament.
FCVBA, bankrolled by Welcoat House Paints’ Terry Que, Ironcon Builders’ Jimmi Lim and Freego’s Edward Tio, also advanced to the finals of the 50-years and 60-years divisions by crushing their respective rivals to line itself up for another grand sweep of the event.
With former PBA star Lim Eng Beng, Bong dela Cruz, Zotico Tan, Lim and Que at the helm, the 60s coasted to a 79-49 win over the host squad for their fourth straight win. They were playing against PCFBL for the title at presstime.
The Joel Yap-mentored 50-years squad needed only one quarter to overpower Pontianak Meteor of Indonesia, 72-46, behind Elmer Reyes, Kenneth Yap and Jerry Gonzales.
They can extend their reign to four if they beat the host squad again yesterday.
