MANILA, Philippines - After its first out-of-town basketball games a month ago, the NCAA will accomplish another first as it brings its Season 88 beach volley games starting today to the Boardwalk of the Subic Bay Free Port Zone in Subic Bay, Zambales.
Tournament chair Paul Supan of Jose Rizal said Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority chairman and administrator Roberto Garcia and SBMA tourism chief Raul Marcelo along with some management committee members chaired by Fr. Vic Calvo, OP, of host Letran will grace the opener.
“By holding our NCAA beach volleyball tournament in Subic Bay, the league is accomplishing another first,” said Supan.
All eyes are on Perpetual Help, which topped the women’s division and finished second in both the men’s and boys’ categories to emerge as last year’s most successful team in the sport.
A total of 30 games will be played today, starting at 11:30 a.m., while 40 games will be fought tomorrow, starting at 7:30 a.m.
Beach volley action will take a four-day break before resuming on Aug. 31 with 30 matches, Sept. 1 with 32 games and Sept. 2 when all the playoff and championship games in all three divisions – men’s, women’s and boys – will be staged.
The Lady Altas take the opener against the Lady Cardinals at 11:30 p.m. while the Arellano U-Jose Rizal and Emilio Aguinaldo-Jose Rizal men’s and boys’ duels, respectively, will be played on two of the three courts being prepared just for this event.
The oldest collegiate league already made history last month when it brought a pair of seniors games to Sta. Cruz, Laguna with Gov. ER Ejercito-Estrada as host.
