Chot enlists 6-foot-5 point guard for Gilas

- Joey Villar, Nelson Beltran - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - National coach Chot Reyes has a new Fil-Am recruit in Matt Ganuela Rosser whom he included for the Smart Gilas Pilipinas team competing in the 2012 Williams Jones Cup set Aug. 18-26 in Taipei.

Rosser is a 6-foot-5 legitimate point guard fresh from his stint with the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos that he helped rule the US NCAA Division II Championship in 2010.

He’s now practicing with the national training team, visited in their session at the Treston Fort gym yesterday morning by NBA Fil-Am champion coach Eric Spoelstra of the Miami Heat.

“He’s our new find after Gabe Norwood, Kelly Williams, Joe Devance and Jarred Dillinger. He’s born in the Philippines and he holds a Philippine passport,” said Reyes of Rosser, back in the country having finished his playing years and business management studies at Cal Poly.

He started at point guard spot for the Broncos from his sophomore year in 2009-10. He averaged 24 minutes, 4.0 points and 3.5 rebounds in their NCAA title run.

Son of James Rosser and his Filipina mother Gina Ganuela, Matt played for the Temecula Valley Golden Bears in high school.

In his senior year as a Golden Bear, he averaged 18 points and 10 rebounds, and made the all-Southwestern League first team.

Reyes got to know this Fil-Am through his US networks, like in the case of Norwood, Williams, Devance and Dillinger.

Rosser will have his initial action as member of the national pool in the Jones Cup, playing with Marcus Douthit, Ranidel de Ocampo, Larry Fonacier, Sonny Thoss, LA Tenorio, Mac Baracael, Jeff Chan, Gabe Norwood, Rico Villanueva, Gary David, Sol Mercado, JayR Reyes and N-LEX gunner Garvo Lanete
