MANILA, Philippines - Top Filipino triathlete Nikko Brian Huelgas has been selected as one of three Asian triathletes to participate in the ITU World Under-23 and Junior Camp slated Oct. 7-15 in Auckland, Australia.
Huelgas, along with Kazakhstan’s Oxana Grot and Karolina Solovyova, were picked by the ITU (International Triathlon Union) Sports Development Group for their huge potentials among 30 Asian nominees for the camp.
Meanwhile, national triathlon coach and former champion George Vilog was also selected to participate in the camp as a facilitating coach to work under world-class triathlon mentors.
Backed by Century Tuna, the Philippine Sports Commission and the Triathlon Association of the Philippines (TRAP), Huelgas will also be competing in the Under-23 Elite competition, also in Auckland, on Oct. 20, the same day the 2012 ITU World Championships will be held.
Huelgas finished seventh in the Asian Triathlon Championships in Tateyama, Japan last April.
After Auckland, Huelgas will proceed to Brisbane to take part in a high-performance one-month training camp under coach Dan Atkins. Huelgas will return to the country in time for the Century Tuna ASTC Asian Duathlon Championships (ADC) in Subic Bay in November.
