Mendoza, Gonzales cop Dunlop tennis diadems

MANILA, Philippines - Isabella Mendoza overwhelmed Bea Ebriega with a superb all-around game and romped off with a 6-2, 6-0 victory to rule the second Dunlop Pinoy Island age-group tennis tournament at the Imus Tennis Club in Imus, Cavite recently.

The 17-year-old Mendoza, a senior at Assumption College, imposed her will early, breaking Ebriega twice in the opening set then sustaining her pace in the second to complete the straight-victory and clinch the girls’ 18-and-under crown in the tournament sponsored by Dunlop, PinoyIsland.com and the Imus Tennis Club.

Marcen Gonzales, a mainstay of Ateneo high school varsity squad, defeated Prince Salvacion and Stefan Suarez to sweep the boys’ 18- and 16-and-under titles, respectively, in the two weekend event also hosted by the Meadowood Executive Village Tennis Club in Bacoor with Renato Selmar as tournament referee.

Jade Capadocia downed Melanie Faye Dizon to cop the girls’ 14-and-under diadem but Dizon held off Gabby Zoleta and took the girls’ 12-and-under crown.

Cenon Gonzales Jr. defeated Macky del Rosario for the boys’ 14-and-under title although del Rosario earlier copped the boys’ 12-and-under crown over Enrico Luis Ong. Stefano Gurria clipped Alfred Doloroso to capture the 10-unisex plum.
