Orcollo bows out in semis

- The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Dennis Orcollo got past Indonesian Cherry Suliawan but fell to Great Britain’s Karl Boyes in their semifinal duel in the 2012 Guinness World Series of Pool: Speed Ball Challenge in Surabaya, Indonesia Sunday.

Boyes made short work of Orcollo, 3:49 minutes against the Filipino’s 5:37 minutes then went on to beat compatriot and reigning world No. 1 Darren Appleton to clinch the crown.

Appleton earlier survived Filipino Jeffrey de Luna in their quarterfinal duel, 4:37 minutes to 4:56 minutes then beat Chris Melling in the other semifinal duel, 4:43 minutes to 5:12 minutes.

Boyes, however, humbled Appleton in their thrilling seven-rack finale with an extraordinary time of 5:33 minutes versus Appleton’s 7:03 minutes.

It was actually Appleton, who broke out the gates quicker, downing two racks in 1:38 minutes with Boyes trailing three seconds behind with 1:41 minutes. Unfazed, Boyes buckled down and amazingly orchestrated one of the quickest rack run-outs of the tournament in the third, clocking 39 seconds for a total time of 2:20 minutes and taking an 18-second lead.

Unfortunately for Appleton it all went downhill from there. The man they call “Dynamite” appeared to have self destructed by snookering himself in the fourth for a forced push out 10 second penalty; the usually calm and collected Appleton suddenly found himself deep in trouble.
