PSA shootfest fires off

- The Philippine Star

Manila, Philippines -  Members and officials of the Philippine Sportswriters Association, the country’s oldest media organization, vie in the second PSA Shooting Championships-Sen. Chiz Escudero Cup at the Armscor Shooting Range at Makati Cinema Square.

Abac Cordero of The STAR and Kristel Satumbaga of the Manila Bulletin seek to defend their respective crowns in the one-day tournament serving as part of the PSA’s annual fellowship activities.

Cordero made a perfect score of 100 points to dominate the men’s division of the inaugural tournament last year, while Satumbaga surprised the field by topping the ladies side.

Majority of the PSA membership, composed of sports editors and sportswriters from the country’s leading broadsheets, tabloids and from the web-based sports news provider spin.ph, however, have already familiarized themselves with safe gun handling and are out to challenge the reigning champions.

All PSA members attended a seminar on gun safety conducted by no less than Sen. Escudero, an avid sport shooting proponent.

He was assisted by officials of Armscor, who also helped in familiarizing PSA members with different gun calibers before the tournament. They will also conduct a refresher course today.

PSA president Rey Bancod, sports editor of Tempo, requires participants to attend the refresher course before they can compete.

Other backers of the tournament, presented by Sen. Escudero, are the Philippine Basketball Association, myPhone, and Adidas Action 3 as major sponsors with support from the Philippine Sports Commission and the Basketball Efficiency Scientific Training (BEST) Center of former national coach Nic Jorge.
