Thirteen-year-old Cayanan shines in Coseteng Cup

MANILA, Philippines - Thirteen-year-old Paula Cayanan clocked a strong 28.50 seconds, a US Triple A standard, in the 50m freestyle and led an exclusive roster of record breakers at the close of the second Nikki Coseteng Swimming Championships yesterday at the Rizal Memorial swimming pool.

Coached by Joey Andaya, the promising young girl from Arellano University emerged as the swimmer with the most number of records broken.

Sharing top honors was Carl Patrick Bormate who also matched the AAA standard in all his events – the 200m individual medley, 100m freestyle, 100m backstroke and 100m butterfly.

Cayanan amd Bormate, from San Sebastian and coached by Fernando Yumol, received an all-expense-paid trip, with free airfare and accommodation from Sen. Nikki Coseteng, to the forthcoming Singapore International Age Group meet.

Philippine Swimming League president Susan Papa said she was impressed with the performance of the record breakers from among over 400 swimmers from 49 clubs all over the Philippines.

“They have broken over three dozen PSL records and have made vast improvements over their personal best marks,” said Papa.

Boys 5-10: Marc Bryan Dula (5), Charles Dylan Chia (6), Vaughn Andre Aquino (7), Charles Ticbaen (8), Robin Serranillo (9), Gideon Bibal (10)

Record breakers 10-under: Juliana Villanueva, Richaila Rivera, Lans Ventabal (all 7 years old), Ronnel Alcantara (8), Bhay Newberry and ZoeMarie Hilario (both 9 years).

Record breakers 11-18 and over: Carl Patrick Bormate, Andrei Resol, McTracy John Alindogan, Christi Allain Payot, Jesse Kirei Tan, Vanne Zendrix Yumol, Portia Kate Doragos and Rafael Barreto (all 11 years old), Maria Siso (12), Paula Cayanan, Nathan Cheng and Emanuel Joshua Lorbes (both 13), Darwin Tumaneng and Benedict Geneta (both 14), Ralph Kevin Claveria, Delia Angela Cordero, Jacklyn Orig, Allia Cortado (all 16), Mark Jayson Alindogan, Mhikcoloe Dominic Abina, Frances Pallasigui, Michael Bunag, Shalom Sabino, Zack-Mio Sermon (15-17) Jeron Mercader, Whinson Ybardolaza and Andrei Manzo (18 & over).
